Things to consider before you set up your online training course

There are so many options when it comes to setting up your online training, that it can become totally bewildering.

Many “experts” will tell you to go with one of the “web based platforms” such as thinkific, teachable or kajabi.

Whilst these are great platforms, they do have their inherent strengths and more importantly weaknesses.

We believe in having TOTAL CONTROL OF YOUR OWN CONTENT.

Whilst these companies tell you that you have control, you do not really. Yes, you can add and take away content as and when you see fit and you have the appearance of control – but THEY are controlling YOUR product and information.

If you are happy with that, then go ahead and join up – as they are great tools, of that there is no doubt.

We have even been tempted by them in the past.

They make it seem so easy to get started and often offer you a free trial.

However, the costs soon begin to spiral and they never stop. You have to keep paying no matter what.

Miss a payment by mistake and you could even lose your set up and end up with some very upset customers!

Ask yourself these questions...

Do you want total control of your own content?

It would make sense, you have worked for years to gain this knowledge – so it seems like a good idea to keep ownership!

With our methods, you have 100% control of your own content.

You can even protect it with multiple membership levels of your own choice – total flexibility!

Do you want total control of your own income?

Some of these online course platforms not only charge you an ongoing fee, they want a cut of your income for the privilige!

With our system, you will use your own processor like Paypal, Stripe etc.

Your money should always be your money!

Do you want self hosting?

If you have a website already, then you are already paying for hosting.

Why not simply use that option and avoid the hassle of paying again with an online course platform.

Our system simply bolts onto an existing site or can be added as a subsite – incredibly simple.

Don’t I need to set up a Sales Funnel system?

If you want a Sales Funnel – that is extremely simple to do.

There is absolutely zero need for one of those fancy funnel builders like Click Funnels – do you really want to pay $297 a Month plus fees to host a few web pages?

A sales funnel is merely a few web pages that are set up in a pre-determined sequence, whereby your user goes from page 1 to page 2 and then to page 3.

That can be done with your existing set up and save yourself $3600+ per year!

Do you want to be able to set up multiple courses?

With the systems we help you implement, you have an unlimited number of courses available.

You can have an unlimited number of users too.

What about integrations with my other software?

Most of the online platforms only integrate with a few other systems – which can be a real pain. We know, we have been there so many times over the years.

With the method we recommend, you have more integrations than all of the online platforms combined.

We simply do not know of a payment processor, email software etc that our recommendations do not integrate with automatically.

What about ongoing costs?

All of the online platforms have ongoing costs.

If you only have a very small course and very few students and do not expect to grow, then they might well be the way to go.

If that is the case, then Teachable is probably the best option for you.

They charge $1 plus 10% for each and every transaction on their free but limited plan.

This can very quickly rise to $299 per month as you grow your business.

We are actually a big fan of monthly fees, as it means that company you are using actually has an income and will more than likely stay in business.

Be wary of the lifetime deals when it comes to your business – unless it is so cheap and not really needed.

Our methods do have an annual cost to them for software renewals and updates – but that is tiny when compared to the annual cost of an online teaching program.

If we used Thinkific or Kajabi for example, for our own online courses, our annual fee would be close to $5000.00 and that still would not cover all the products we have available.

Plus we would still have to host our Video content somewhere else as well.

So, if we are so clever, what do we recommend?

We HIGHLY recommend that you have as much control as possible over your own content.

With that in mind, here is a typical set up for our clients.

Small Course Client - Under 50 lessons

  • Website – WordPress
  • Memberpress Software – $179 a year
  • Memberpress Courses Addon – included
  • Video hosting – Youtube is Free or Vimeo (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) at $12 per month

This simple setup will get you up and running in a few hours, it really is that easy.

Memberpress can handle free and paid members and control access and everything.

It is a superb tool and just works. It has fantastic support. We use this set up on several of our sites.

Medium Course Client - Under 150 lessons

  • Website – WordPress
  • Memberpress Software – $179-299 a year
  • Memberpress Courses Addon – included
  • Video hosting – Youtube is Free or Vimeo (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) at $12 per month

This simple setup will get you up and running in a day or so.

In fact as you grow from small to medium, you can simply upgrade Memberpress or possibly keep it as it is.

Memberpress can handle free and paid members and control access and everything.

It is a superb tool and just works. It has fantastic support. We use this set up on several of our sites.

Large Course Client - multiple courses with over 200 lessons

  • Website – WordPress
  • Amember Software ($149 Per Year)
  • Learndash Software ($229 Per year)
  • Vimeo Pro ($240 Per year)

This set up is what we use on most of our sites, as they are so large.

Amember can handle whatever you want to throw at it.

It integrates with just about everything automatically and is, hands down, the most powerful membership software available.

The support is first class but the documentation sucks big time. The learning curve is huge, which puts people off.

However, once you understand the logic – it is far and away the best system you can ever have.

Learndash is a pain in the arse to say the least.

Over the years it has evolved and changed dramatically.

Again, the learning curve is huge, the support is average and the documentation is ok.

Once set up correctly – it works EXTREMELY well… but woe betide you, should you make one setting slightly wrong.

Amember handles adding users to the courses automatically and is set up to work with Learndash out of the box and reduces the chance of error in set up.

If you know what you are doing, or have a team that knows what they are doing, then jump into this set up NOW!

If you do not – then we can help you – just get in touch.
